Crime and Punishment

The juxtaposition of these two stories in today's news headlines was just too priceless.

South African judges are disgusted at Tony Yengeni's appeal to reduce his sentence for corruption from 4 years with possibility of probation after 8 months, to 18 months suspended sentence. The reason is that government officials only have to give up their seats if they are dealt a sentence of 12 months or more of jail time. Reduction of the sentence will allow Yengeni to return to parliament. Yes, that's right, in South Africa you may still serve in government after being convicted of corruption. Yes, we still like to pretend we live in a country with a real government and not a banana republic.

Meanwhile, in China, the punishment for corruption is death, previously administered by a bullet to the back of the head, more recently by lethal injection. Human Rights activists are all over this like flies on shit. Personally, I don't see the problem.

ofcourse, a bullet to the back of the head is cheaper. although, when compared to the cost of keeping someone in jail or in office, the cost of the poison become trivial. and all countries should have a similar penalty, with a proper appeal system. not everyone convicted is guilty.

Isn't it just typical of how things have changed. The most corrupt and those guilty of the biggest crimes are always looking to get away with it.
The poor and the innocent are the ones that suffer the most, and the fat cats cry foul and get away with it. Try being the good samaritan and the SA police will in all likelihood arrest you.
I have no probs with the bullet either. Action speaks louder than words!

the only problem with the bullet is... don't all the criminals have the guns now?

wow, nice word verification: xeniopuf. it's like the biological classification for tribbles or something. xeniopuf tribbalus.

Wouldn't that then become a case of "live by the bullet, die by the bullet"?

firstly - my lip aches from laughing at your biological classification. beautiful. ^#^

secondly - human rights activists REALLY bother me. it's like they remove themselves COMPLETELY from reality, and the way the world really works.

it's people like that who believe that humans are smart enough *CHOKE* to learn without pain, and that war and (disgusting) acts of violence are never necessary.

i'll tell you something for nothing. if i was a chinese official, and i was corrupt, i'd make BLOODY SURE that i wasn't caught.
